Unsung heroes of the Wild Wild West
This Black History Month (2024) the students at Valley Park School paid homage to the Black unsung heroes of the ‘Wild Wild West’. We held assemblies and tasked the students with researching more about this topic.
Our students were provided with a fuller and more accurate understanding of cowboys, which are central to American culture. However, this narrative often excludes or minimises the contributions of Black individuals who played a vital and significant role in cattle drives, ranching and settling the American West.
The students really got stuck into this and produced paintings, drawings, poems and stories; highlighting extraordinary figures such as Nat Love and Stage Coach Mary. The students were invited to submit a piece of work for a whole school competition and it was fantastic to receive so many entries from students of all years.
Finally, we have chosen thirty students to visit Chatham Dockyard to take part in their new Empire tour next term.
