BTEC Nationals Applied Science (Extended Certificate)
This is a practical, work-related course that combines academic knowledge with the skills needed to pursue a career in a scientific setting. All science disciplines are covered, providing you with a broad based Science qualification.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- 2 GCSE Sciences: Grade 5
- GCSE Mathematics: Grade 4
- English Language or Literature: Grade 4

WHAT TO EXPECT
Opportunties for independent laboratory work. An element of the course will be on calculations and mathematical problem solving. Frequent assignments/written reports that count towards your final grade. High level of challenge, particularly in the examination units, which cover all three disciplines (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).

- Unit 1 Principles and Application of Biology
- Unit 2 Principles and Application of Chemistry
- Unit 3 Principles and Application of Physics
- Unit 4 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
- Unit 5 Science Investigation Skills
HOW IT’S ASSESSED
Unit 1, 2 and 3 will be externally assessed by an exam with Unit 4 and 5 being internally assessed by a portfolio and coursework.

- Complements the study of other STEM pathway courses, in Sixth Form and afterwards such as Sport Sciences, Nursing and further study of Science.

Students should study the Applied Science course if they enjoy the practical side of the subject and its application to real life. This course is excellent for students who like Science but are unsure of which area to specialised in, it provides a broader range of scientific knowledge. It teaches transferable skills and critical thinking that is a fantastic opportunity for students to further their career should they wish to go directly into industry or attend university.
