Ashura holds different meanings for Sunni and Shia Muslims. Sunnis celebrate it as the day Moses parted the Red Sea & the salvation of the Israelites. For Shias, it is a day of mourning for Husayn ibn Ali's martyrdom, the Prophet Muhammad's grandson. pic.twitter.com/3wtiRS2P3N— Valley Park School () July 5, 2025

Sew Good

Valley Park alum, Ashleigh Smale, has been making PPE for NHS staff and frontline workers.

Ashleigh, who studied Fashion Design at University, wanted to put her sewing skills to good use during the crisis, but wasn’t sure how to go about it.

“I joined a Facebook group called Maidstone Sewing Group for NHS & keyworkers during Covid19,” said Ashleigh. “I found great information about patterns, fabrics, quantities required etc. Basically, everything to get started!”

Go Bridal, a bridal wear boutique in Tunbridge Wells which Ashleigh manages, kindly offered to fund the cost of the fabric. “They wanted to ensure we used 100% cotton,” said Ashleigh, “which is perfect for when they’re washed at high temperatures.”

“I’ve now donated 89 Scrub Caps and 19 Scrunchies made from the off-cuts - to ensure there was as little waste as possible - to the Facebook group who will distribute the items accordingly around Maidstone and Pembury. I’m now starting on other items such as scrubs and headbands”

“If you can donate anything - from money to unwanted fabric or bedding to the coordinators found on this group to help others get sewing, then you are making a difference and helping our amazing NHS!”
