Our Shared Responsibility

Numeracy

At Valley Park School, we feel very passionately about ensuring that our students are continuously developing their Numeracy skills, not just in Mathematics, but across all of their subjects.

Our staff share the same vision for our students to be able to cope well with the mathematical demands made in different subjects and for the value of Numeracy to be promoted, developed and practiced.

How is Numeracy promoted at Valley Park? To support with numeracy, the school has invested in Hegarty Mathematics. It's an online resource with videos and quizzes that will help students boost their Numeracy skills.

Please see our earlier post here about how this resource is helping our students boost their progress at Key Stage 3. Look out for more posts about how this will also support Key Stage 4 and 5.

The Mathematics Department promotes Numeracy by showing students how Numeracy and Mathematics is needed for real-life problems and how it is used in careers. Earlier this year, students took part in a budgeting task to mark the arrival of Cucina, and about pay slips and income tax. It seems that students thoroughly enjoyed learning how to budget their money, and feel more confident in how to use Mathematics in their everyday lives, as the quotes below reveal:

I have really enjoyed finding out about all the expenses I will have when I move out of home.  I didn’t realise there was so many taxes and bills to pay.

I really need to get a good job when I leave school, I didn’t realise everything was so expensive.

Students will also be seeing how Numeracy can be linked with other subjects, as Numeracy pre-starters are being used across the curriculum to show students cross-curricular links between numeracy and a range of subjects across the curriculum. We look forward to reporting in more detail on this later in the year.

To further promote Numeracy, the Mathematics Department will be planning very exciting activities for the NSPCC Number Day and National Numeracy Day, which are coming up very soon! Watch this space!
