Storytelling Week
30 January to 6 February marked National Storytelling week this year, and so we celebrated this with our Key Stage 3 students.
Storytelling aids learning within all subjects and has a positive effect on students’ memory skills. It's imperative to cultivate these skills within our students, broadening their imagination and developing their ability to craft effective narratives, something they will develop further in Key Stage 4 and at GCSE level.
When students engage with storytelling, it encourages higher-level thinking, promoting them to analyse and synthesise, as well as broadening their oral skills by reading their stories aloud and sharing these with their peers.
In honour of Storytelling week, Heads of Year for Years 7, 8 and 9 all produced a video shared during form time, explaining to their year groups their favourite books.
Mrs Wade spoke incredibly highly of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, encouraging all Year 7 to read some joyful fiction where ‘the underdog wins!’
Miss Blackman recommended Matilda to her Year 9s, and spoke about the wonders of the book being turned into a West End performance.
Miss Bulbrook shared with her Year 8s the adventures of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five, encouraging students to engage with the excitement and the quests explored through this text.
As well as a celebration in form, the English Department set all Key Stage 3 students the challenge of writing an effective and engaging opening to a story. Nawal in Year 8 cleverly used adjectives to craft description, whilst Lena in Year 7 used the senses to beautifully develop description.
