Exam Stress?

As we enter term five it feels although summer is just around the corner, suntan lotion is on offer in the supermarkets, paddling pools will sell like hot cakes, the media will discuss ‘the hottest summer ever’ and with all this another inevitable feature is GCSE and A level exams.

The exam season will soon be upon us and I'm sure everyone will be feeling the nervous excitement which is typical of this time. What can often be overlooked is how parents feel during this time and how they can support their children.

As a parent, you play a vital role in your child's education and success. Exams can be a challenging and stressful time for students, but with your support, they can overcome any obstacles and perform to the best of their abilities. Below are some helpful tips; a top 10-on how you can support your child during exam season.

  1. Encourage Good Study Habits: Good study habits are critical to success on exams. Encourage your child to study regularly, take breaks, and get enough sleep. Help them establish a routine that works for them and stick to it. This will help them stay organised and focused on their revision.
  2. Create a Positive Study Environment: A quiet and well-lit study area can help your child focus and retain information. Encourage them to remove distractions and take breaks when necessary. 
  3. Help with Planning: Encourage your child to keep track of exam dates and make a study schedule. This will help them stay on top of their work and avoid last-minute cramming. Remind them to prioritise their studies and set aside time for breaks and relaxation.
  4. Provide Resources: Make sure your child has access to the resources they need to succeed. This may include textbooks, revision guides, flash cards or workbooks. There are also many good online resources such as BBC bitesize, Oak Academy and Seneca Learning.
  5. Offer Encouragement: Encourage your child to do their best and remind them that exams are just one part of their education. Celebrate their successes and help them see the bigger picture of their education. Let them know that you believe in their abilities and that you are proud of their hard work and effort.
  6. Be a Good Listener: If your child is feeling overwhelmed or stressed, be there to listen to their concerns. Offer words of encouragement and support and help them find ways to cope with stress. Encourage them to talk to their teachers if they need additional support.
  7. Keep Perspective: Exams can be stressful, but it's important to keep things in perspective. Remind your child that exams are just one part of their education and that they will have many other opportunities to succeed in the future. Encourage them to maintain a positive outlook and focus on their goals.
  8. Avoid Putting Too Much Pressure: While it's important to encourage your child to do their best, it's equally important to avoid putting too much pressure on them. Excessive pressure can lead to stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact performance. Let them know that you support them, no matter the outcome.
  9. Celebrate Their Achievements: Regardless of the exam results, celebrate your child's hard work and effort. This will help boost their confidence and self-esteem, which are essential for future success. Plan a special outing or treat as a way of recognising their efforts and achievements.
  10. Take Care of Yourself: As a parent, you also need to take care of yourself. Make sure you get enough sleep, exercise, and take breaks when necessary. This will help you stay refreshed and focused, which will enable you to support your child in the best way possible.

In conclusion, supporting your child during exam season is an important responsibility, but it's also an opportunity to help them develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the future.
