Students; You are our key-workers
To all our students; you are our key-workers.
Much has been highlighted in the media in the last few months about the importance of key-workers: the amazing members of our superb NHS, from consultants, doctors, nurses, & orderlies to other supporting staff like the care teams in our communities, our educators from early years to professors, not to mention the key-workers keeping our essential services going so we can socially distance in relative comfort.
Like you, I applaud them all on Thursday evenings at 8pm, but I think about them during the rest of the week too. I’m very grateful for the support provided for my two sons from their schools. It’s reassuring to know my mother-in-law has a fantastic team of carers looking after her even though she’s 250 miles away and we cannot visit her. I’m sure some of you find yourselves in similar circumstances and are similarly grateful.
It got me to thinking about everyone’s role in this global pandemic. Maybe there will be a mind shift on the importance of such jobs? I sincerely hope so.
But where do you fit into the grand scheme of things?
You are all key-workers in my opinion. By following the advice from our government and scientists, you are all playing an essential part in beating this virus. At this formative time of your life, you may still not know what you want your future career to be. That is perfectly normal. But I hazard a guess that many of you will take inspiration from the work you see being carried out on the many different forms of media we have at our disposal. Whether that is a job in the medical field, caring for others, providing essential services or working in the technology industry which keeps us together whilst apart, many of you will be our key-workers in the future.
That is something I, for one, am very grateful for.
Be thankful for what you have, work hard for what you don’t yet have.
