What’s your new year’s resolution?
I always feel it’s a bit odd making a resolution in January – as anyone in education knows, students included of course, the big move to the next year up always happens in September, and so September is a great time to consider the year just gone and our thoughts about what we’d like to achieve in the year ahead.
For students joining us in Year 7, and those joining us in Year 12 (not forgetting our new colleagues, too), this new year is an even bigger event for you, with a new school to become familiar with, and the excitement of meeting so many new people.
Do you get that feeling of ‘butterflies’ before the first day? I still do – will things go well? Will something go wrong? What have I forgotten? Will I still remember the old routines?
Alongside that, though, is the sheer anticipation of the fresh start. A new, clean, page. A clean slate.
Mr Duncan coincidentally shared a brilliant quote with me last week – and I’ve borrowed it to use here. I think it sums up the first-day-back feeling perfectly, how about you?
The chief beauty about time is that you cannot waste it in advance. The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you, as perfect, as unspoiled, as if you had never wasted or misapplied a single moment in all your life. You can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose.

This week has been a long time coming, and the months ahead will likely not be a breeze either, but at long last we have the opportunity to be together again, with all that that entails.
Happy new year!
