Spreading Positivity
I drive home these days in the dark, as I’m sure many of you do, too, but it feels like there are so many illuminations lighting the way lately.
I'm fortunate enough to live near a number of families who celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights (this year, 14 November) and seeing their homes lit up for this occasion is always a cheerful time during this cold, wintry period.
Since that weekend, however, something else has happened. I wonder if you've seen it, too? We've been in lockdown since 5 November, so some households have taken matters into their own hands: boxes have been dug out of lofts, people have been up ladders, facades have been festooned and trees have been made to sparkle.
This is a clear statement on the part of so many that says, 'we know it’s hard-going at the moment, so we're spreading positivity’. I’m not sure if it’s a subconscious message or a deliberate plan, but I’m thankful for it nonetheless.
Metaphorically-speaking, every so often we receive a little sparkle of our own – a little comment or email that makes our day – and I sincerely hope you, too, are finding a little bit of joy in these worrying times.
Coronavirus has meant that, this year, we're unable to serve Christmas dinner at our dementia café, 'Decaf'. So, last Friday we made our very first doorstep delivery of festive cheer to all those who would have attended. A big thank you must go to our restaurant, Cucina, for the delicious cupcakes! Today, I've even heard that a really kind member of the local community has made 35 cushions to accompany our deliveries!
We're running a ‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ in aid of the Salvation Army throughout the remainder of term, thanks to Sixth Form student Luke, who is a local volunteer. We’re asking our community to donate non-perishable items each day in December to give back to our community and provide some support during these difficult times. We're collecting donations and will arrange for everything to be transported to the Salvation Army Foodbank. Please do support us if you can.
Have you noticed the sparkle of early illuminations? Have you already done yours? Have you sprinkled kindness like fairy lights?
Let us know, and brighten our day!
