The power of escapism
Our Local School Board governors paid us a visit on Friday afternoon, and we were delighted to host them in our Library.
Although the focus of their visit was to check in with our reading and language development programmes, it was our students who stole the show.
Colleagues and Sixth Form students run daily reading interventions in the Library, and these events are undoubtedly among the highlights of our week.
Not only are our younger students building their confidence by reading aloud to their peers, but some have already made such gains this term that they voluntarily read for our governors, too.
Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling said;
I do believe something magical can happen when you read a good book.
With all her wizarding know-how, one would expect her to be a reliable source!
That's the power of escapism, and the freeing sense of adventure that reading a great book can bring. Reading is also, of course, a vital, enabling life skill that is heavily relied-upon in all walks of life. To quote Roald Dahl;
If you are going to get anywhere in life, you have to read a lot of books.
In researching well-known quotes in preparation for scribing this blog, I found plenty - but this was my favourite:
I cannot remember the books I've read any more than the meals I've eaten; even so, they have made me.
Ralph Waldo Emerson.
And so they will have. From feeding one's thirst for knowledge, to enhancing one's lexicon, to building one's technical understanding of how to write well, reading is that wonderful hobby which helps us think, grow and relax.
J. K. Rowling was correct - it's pure magic!
