Quit talking and begin doing
On 8 May, while penning this week's blog offering, I discovered that today is the birthday of Sir David Attenborough, so I was inspired to look to him for some wisdom, and a thought for the week ahead.
In his illustrious, decades-long career, he has modelled - and thereby generated - a love and fascination for the natural world that spans generations.
However, I was surprised to read that Sir David's collection of 'Life' documentaries -which began with Life on Earth in 1979 and has since drawn in plants, Antarctica, birds, mammals, cold-blooded reptiles and amphibians to name just a few - were not originally conceived as a series, instead they underwent an evolution of their own; one programme led onto the next, and then then all subsequent series followed on in the same way.
I found this a comforting piece of information; all too often the concept of getting started on a project is a huge one. Sometimes the desire to complete an idea brilliantly is debilitating in its own right, as we get sucked into thinking about the what-ifs and the sheer magnitude of the road ahead.
Often, it's best to get started. Seldom is it impossible to change course midway if you need to. I am a great believer in committing to improving what we do by just a tiny 1% every day, for those barely-perceptible alterations accumulate and, before you know it, enough time has elapsed and progress made to create magnificent end points.
The only way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.
