Aspiration
Most people have dreams or aspirations that they would love to achieve, whether that is taking on a new adventure, doing something that takes them out of their comfort zone or developing a new skill.
We could aspire for things that we want to achieve this week or have more long-term aspirations like how we want to feel when we receive our examination results, or the future career that we want.
For me, ever since I received a blackboard for my eighth birthday, my aspiration was to become the best teacher I can be so that I can help others achieve their aspirations.
Aspirations are important because they can contribute to our development as a person and who we grow to be. Therefore, quite rightly, it is one of our core values, and aspirations are continually spoken about. Who is it that you aspire to be?
Aspirations come in all shapes and sizes – they are unique and individual. However, it is important to remember, aspirations are not the same as expectations. To be in with a chance of achieving our aspirations, we must also have high expectations of ourselves. Research has suggested that in having high expectations of ourselves and others having high expectations of us, we are more likely to make significant progress towards our goals and aspirations. It is a saying that we have all heard so many times, but still rings true – if you believe, you can achieve.
Having high expectations of ourselves will encourage us to work towards our aspirations and putting things in motion to make sure that they happen for us! This can look different for everyone, but there are small things that we can do each day to keep moving towards our goal:
- Write down your goal - Get your goal out of your imagination and on to a piece of paper. This then becomes a statement of intent.
- Positive thinking - Develop a positive, “glass-half-full” approach to every aspect of your life, including your thoughts about how you will achieve your goals.
- Take the first step - It is important not to procrastinate. The moment when real action is required is often when many goals fall by the wayside.
In the magical words of S Club 7 – Reach for the stars… but make sure it’s accompanied by high expectations!
