Promoting Strong Literacy and Numeracy
A Shared Responsibility
Our Valley Park parents and carers are an integral part of our school community and have ensured the successful implementation of home learning when this became necessary.
We would like to thank our Valley Park families for everything you have done to support our young people in challenging circumstances. To support you to help our students further we would like to share tips and resources, and keep you informed about how you can support learners at home with our shared responsibility of improving standards of literacy and numeracy. All parts of the school community are affected by - and contribute towards - the promotion of strong literacy and numeracy.
This week I would like to share with you some news about how we are promoting literacy and numeracy at school so you can engage in conversations about this at home and hopefully get involved!
This week years 7, 8 and 9 continue to drop everything and read! During period 3, teachers and students will read for 10 minutes. They should be reading outside of lessons too. Perhaps you could find a regular time to read with them? We would love to hear your stories about how you are dropping everything and reading at home! This term we will also be sharing why reading is so important and tips on how to engage with literature.
To support with numeracy, the school has invested in Hegarty Mathematics. It is an online resource with videos and quizzes. Some parents have told me they've watched the videos with our students and now understand how to solve equations!
Next week we will be sharing how students can use this to recap earlier work so they're prepared for lessons. Perhaps they need to boost their Key Stage 2 number work or perhaps they need to concentrate on the higher and foundation cross-over topics? We will share lists of topics to review in order to help them to do that.
Later we will also be looking at how strong numeracy skills can enable them to solve problems across the curriculum and at home.
